COOK / CAMP KITCHEN SUPERVISOR 2013

Position reports to:  The APND Program Coordinator and Executive Director, Simon Ross

General Description of the Position: The Camp Kitchen Supervisor / Cook will spend the majority of the summer season (June until September), at our remote wilderness base camp, which operates with the bare minimum of facilities, and be comfortable operating a kitchen that functions without the use of electricity or plumbing.  During this time, they will be responsible for the planning, purchasing, storage, and preparation of all kitchen and meal needs for the camp program. This person is also required to assist with both camp set-up, take down, and year-end inventory. When required they may be asked to assist with program delivery at camp.

Requirements:

  • Skilled in food preparation and knowledgeable of food storage standards in a wilderness environment.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Experience working with youth
  • Comfortable being by themselves in a wilderness environment and within the vicinity of wildlife (i.e. curious bears) 
  • Familiar with vegetarian needs and other common food allergies
  • Food Safe certification
  • Be prepared to mentor an assistant cook
  • Class 4 driver’s license an asset

Basic Duties Include:

  • To plan the required menu with appropriate consideration to budget, dietary needs, and the complexities of operating in a wilderness environment
  • To assist with required pre camp shopping in between camps
  • To assist with the set-up and take down of the camp at the beginning and end of the season 
  • To prepare nutritional meals and snacks. * Must be critically aware of appetites of various groups, considering age and physical activity
  • To ensure drinking water is purified and available at all times
  • To assist in the preparation of any out trip meals prior to camp
  • To ensure that the kitchen area is kept immaculately clean at all times to avoid attracting wildlife
  • To inform Camp Coordinator on propane levels and give adequate notice to re-fill, taking advantage of all possible trips in and out of camp
  • To direct the serving of meals, ensuring participants fairly share the available food
  • To courteously accommodate and direct any designated kitchen help from staff and volunteers in the assisting of meal preparation, chores and clean up of entire kitchen area
  • To ensure trailer is neat and tidy at the end of each camp, ensuring all spoiled or spoiling food is bagged and taken out of camp
  • Arrange recycling into designated storage, and to have it prepared so it will be taken out of camp when Camp Coordinator goes out

This is a summer contract position.  Only selected candidates will be contacted for an interview. Wage ranges on experience between $140-175/day.

Part-time Youth Worker for APND URBAN YOUTH Program 2013

Job Description: The part-time Youth Worker will report to the APND Urban Program Coordinator. The position calls for an experienced individual with a strong background in youth programming (particularily with female youth) and a passion for the Rediscovery vision. The Youth Worker will have the opportunity to draw on their unique skills and incentive to plan and implement programming in unison with the APND Urban Program Coordinator. Working respectfully and effectively within an Aboriginal community context is essential; as is the ability to function as a mentor and leader within a youth group environment.
Qualifications and Experience:

  • Strong experience coordinating and facilitating youth groups particularly working with female youth
  • Familiarity with Indigenous traditions and protocols and experience working in cross-cultural settings.
  • Rediscovery experience
  • Willingness to develop personal growth along with personal relationships
  • High level of emotional intelligence.
  • Multi-task and client oriented.
  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Facilitation of NEW MOON as well as URBAN and JR Urban program evenings and weekend camps.
  • Attendance at evening and other program related workshops.
  • Maintain good relationships with organizations and communities served by GRR and actively build new relationships.
  • Actively build and maintain excellent relationships with Elders and cultural resource people involved with GRR.
  • Assist in facilitating off site activities, which may require non regular work hours.
  • Provide leadership, and Rediscovery spirit to camps

Senior Camp Instructor 2013

Reports To: APND Program Coordinator

 Purpose:
To assist the APND Program Coordinator with program delivery.

Qualifications:         

  • First Aid Training
  • Class Four driver’s license
  • Post secondary education in Outdoor Education, Social Work, and or related discipline.
  • Minimum two years experience in project or camp management / facilitation
  • Knowledgeable of Aboriginal cultural traditions
  • Previous experience working with youth and children
  • Related training in Rediscovery, wilderness first aid, water rescue or safety accreditation are assets; or, willingness to seek training in these areas prior to camp season

Qualities:      

  • Strong cross-cultural communication and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to the Rediscovery model and vision of Ghost River Rediscovery
  • Able to train and assist staff/volunteers, mentor, guide and encourage
  • Able to set and meet deadlines, prepare work-plans
  • Passionate about helping youth learn and grow in wilderness and urban settings
  • Understanding of and dedication to risk management principles

Responsibilities:

  • PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION
  • Attendance at meetings with camp team.
  • Assist in record keeping and documentation for camp.

PROGRAM EVALUATION

  • Assisting with evaluations for participants, volunteers and staff at camp.

PROGRAM DELIVERY

  • Be present at all camps to provide consistency for participants and staff with schedule.
  • Ensure smooth delivery of programming. To be knowledgeable of daily activities and assist with smooth flow of camp delivery. 

FIRST AID

  • The Senior Camp Staff is the designated first aid attendant and must maintain the Medical Attendant Daily log, Incident Investigation Reports, and First Aid Treatment & Accident Report as per Ghost River Rediscovery Health and Safety Program.
  • Maintaining awareness of participant medical needs & administering any drugs to participants that have a signed authorization on file.
  • Review and submits reports with/to the APND Program Coordinator.
  • Ensures First Aid supplies are current, updated and re-supplied.
  • Reorder First Aid supplies as needed.
  • Ensures safekeeping of confidential records in waterproof folders.

  • Display high standards of honesty in all relations; safeguard the reputation of the company

Junior Camp Staff - 2013

Reports To: SR Camp Instructor

Purpose: To assist the camp staff with program delivery.  
Qualifications:

  • First Aid training      
  • Knowledgeable of Aboriginal cultural traditions
  • Previous experience working with youth and children
  • Related training in Rediscovery, wilderness first aid, water rescue or safety accreditation are assets; or, willingness to seek training in these areas prior to camp season

  • Able to communicate with people from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Able to work within a team
  • Able to lead activities such as: drumming, singing, games
  • Able to communicate requests important needs to camp team. 

Responsibilities:

  • Program Administration
  • Attendance at meetings with camp team.
  • Assist in record keeping and documentation for camp.

Program Delivery

  • Be present at all camps to provide consistency for participants and staff with schedule.
  • Ensure smooth delivery of programming. To be knowledgeable of daily activities and assist with smooth flow of camp delivery.
 Groundskeeper
  • Maintain the camping area.
  • Garbage control according to Ghost River Rediscovery Safe work practices.
  • Maintain wood supply according to Ghost River Rediscovery Safe work practices.
  • Safe housing and control of fuel.
  • Assisting cook with cleanliness of eating tents.
  • Teepee care: maintain buttons, pegs, etc.
  • Cleanliness of council fire area

Inventory

  • Maintain the inventory records.
  • Responsible for craft supplies and re-supplying as necessary.
  • Accounting for loaning of equipment such as bear bangers, tools, and compasses using sign out sheets and check-in procedures.
  • Equipment maintenance
  • Review inventory with the Camp Coordinator and each camp.
  • Ensures inventory supplies are current, updated and re-supplied.
  • Reorder Inventory supplies as needed.

Elder Support and Care

  • Assist Elder with needs.
  • Maintain an awareness of potential needs of Elder: ie help with cleaning tent,
  • Daily check-in:  “Is there anything you need?”

Ethical

  • Maintains strict confidentiality of all knowledge of private data and records.
