Ghost River - Aboriginal Seniors Gathering Place (ASGP)
In June 2007, Ghost River Rediscovery Society expanded its horizons by introducing a new program called the Aboriginal Senior’s Gathering Place (ASGP). The program has been designed with a multifaceted purpose with the intention to not only reduce the barriers that elderly community members face, but also to improve the overall social climate for seniors in Calgary and area.
To achieve success, the program aims to ease senior isolation by hosting regular social events and outings. We encourage the involvement of family members in the lives of seniors and oversee the resolution of expressed concerns encountered with outside support networks. As a resource centre, we provide valuable information regarding social and health related senior services, in attempt to bridge the gap between seniors and existing service agencies in the area.
The Aboriginal Senior’s Gathering Place offers a full circle of services by not only offering a senior-specific resource centre and social gathering space, but by also offering programming and events focused on the development and preservation of Aboriginal cultural understanding and appreciation. Effectively, the Aboriginal Senior’s Gathering Place completes a strong circle of service provision within Ghost River Rediscovery. The senior participants provide an invaluable wealth of cultural knowledge, wisdom, skills and life experiences which contribute enormously to the success of our program.
Currently, the Aboriginal Senior’s Gathering Place offers to seniors:
- Luncheons every second week at 12:00pm
- Monthly Potlucks
- Weekly craft days
- Various outings and field trips (Blackfoot Crossing, Museums, Pow Wows, etc.)
- Opportunities to connect Seniors and Youth in various activities
- Workshops and learning activities on topics of interest to seniors
Future program planning focused on Blackfoot/ Cree language
